Google has increased the cloud storage included with its AI Pro subscription from 2TB to 5TB — effective immediately and at no additional cost to subscribers. The monthly price stays at $19.99.
A Significant Value Jump
The upgrade was confirmed by Shimrit Ben-Yair, Google's VP and General Manager of Google Photos and Google One, in a post on X. The move more than doubles the storage allocation for AI Pro subscribers, bringing Google's flagship AI subscription tier well ahead of rivals on the storage dimension.
The AI Pro plan, which launched as Google's mid-tier AI subscription at $19.99/month, bundles access to Gemini Advanced — Google's most capable AI assistant — with Google Drive storage, Google Photos features, and other Google One benefits. Previously offering 2TB, the jump to 5TB makes it one of the most generous storage offerings in the consumer AI subscription market.
Context: The Storage Wars
The timing echoes Google's original Gmail launch in 2004, when the company disrupted the email market by offering 1GB of storage at a time when competitors offered a few megabytes. This 5TB move comes as Google faces increasing competition from Microsoft and Apple in the AI subscription space.
Microsoft 365 Personal, at $9.99/month, includes 1TB of OneDrive storage alongside Microsoft 365 apps and Copilot access. Apple One Premier, at $37.95/month, includes 2TB of iCloud storage bundled with Apple TV+, Arcade, Music, and Fitness+. Google AI Pro at $19.99/month with 5TB storage and Gemini Advanced now occupies a compelling position in that comparison — particularly for users already embedded in Google's ecosystem.
Why This Move Makes Sense for Google
Storage has historically been a driver of platform lock-in. Users who accumulate years of photos, documents, and data in Google Drive are far less likely to switch ecosystems. By dramatically increasing storage at no extra cost, Google is betting that making AI Pro stickier on the storage dimension will pay off in subscriber retention and long-term platform engagement.
It also strengthens Google's case to users who might have considered downgrading after signing up primarily for Gemini access. With 5TB of storage now included, the value proposition extends well beyond the AI features themselves.
What Subscribers Need to Do
Existing AI Pro subscribers will see the storage upgrade applied to their accounts automatically — no action required. New subscribers who sign up going forward will receive the 5TB allocation from day one.
