Google announced on May 6, 2026 that it is reworking how AI Overviews and AI Mode display sources, pulling quotes from Reddit threads, online forums, blogs, and social media into its AI-generated answers under labels such as "Expert Advice" and "Community Perspectives." The update is one of the most visible attempts yet by Google to blend machine-generated summaries with the kind of first-hand opinions users have spent years adding "reddit" to their queries to find.
What is changing
In an example screenshot Google shared, quoted snippets from Reddit, WordPress blogs, and other forum-style sources are arranged above the corresponding outbound links. The labels shift depending on context — Google described "Expert Advice" and "Community Perspectives" as two of the variants — and the company says it will start showing additional metadata, such as a creator's name, handle, or community name, so users can judge a source at a glance before clicking through.
In its own framing, Google said: "For many searches, people are increasingly seeking out advice from others. To help you find the most helpful insights to explore further, AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions."
Subscribed publications and 'Further Exploration'
Google is also adding a "Subscribed" badge to results from news sites that a user already pays for, pushing those links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews. A new "Further Exploration" section will suggest related angles or follow-up questions worth looking into next, mirroring the way many users already chain prompts inside chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude.
Google has not specified a precise rollout schedule for every market, but the changes are tied to AI Mode and AI Overviews more broadly, which are already live for U.S. users.
Why it matters
The move is partly a competitive response to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI-first interfaces that frequently cite Reddit threads and community discussions in their answers. It is also an attempt to address a long-running complaint from publishers and forum operators: that AI Overviews summarized their content while sending fewer clicks back. By labeling community quotes and surfacing creator handles, Google is signaling that human voices — not just AI prose — should be visible in search results.
For SEO and content teams, the practical implication is that visibility inside AI Overviews now extends beyond traditional ranking. Forum threads, subreddit discussions, and creator profiles can be surfaced as quoted sources. Expect a new wave of optimization aimed at getting referenced inside community blocks, not just ranked in the blue links.
The update also lands as Google fights to keep search dominance amid pressure from OpenAI's ChatGPT-native shopping integrations, Etsy's recently announced ChatGPT app, and antitrust scrutiny over how it presents AI-generated answers. Folding Reddit and forum content into AI search is, in effect, Google admitting that the most useful answer is sometimes a stranger on the internet — and trying to make sure that stranger lives inside Google.
