Meta has launched its AI-powered support assistant on Facebook and Instagram globally, while simultaneously announcing plans to deploy more advanced AI systems for content enforcement — moves that together signal a fundamental shift in how the company manages platform safety at scale.
The AI Support Assistant Is Now Live
Following a December preview, the Meta AI support assistant is now rolling out in all regions where Meta AI is available, covering both the iOS and Android Facebook and Instagram apps as well as the desktop Help Center. The tool is designed to resolve account issues end-to-end — not just answer questions, but actually take action on behalf of users.
Supported tasks include reporting scams, impersonation accounts, and problematic content; helping users understand why content was removed and track appeals; managing privacy settings; resetting passwords; and updating profile information. Meta says the assistant typically responds in under five seconds, compared to traditional help center searches or third-party support channels. Among users who provided feedback, Meta reports the majority describe a positive experience.
The assistant is also being extended to users who need help logging back into locked accounts, starting with select cases in the US and Canada before expanding globally.
A Smarter Approach to Content Moderation
Alongside the support assistant launch, Meta announced it is transitioning to more advanced AI content enforcement systems across its platforms. Early test results cited by the company are striking:
- The system catches 5,000 scam attempts per day that no existing review team had identified
- Celebrity impersonation reports among the most-targeted individuals dropped by over 80%
- The AI identifies twice as much violating adult sexual solicitation content versus human review teams, while reducing mistake rates by more than 60%
- The system can detect account takeovers by correlating subtle signals — a new login location, a password change, and a profile edit — that look innocuous in isolation
- Coverage now spans languages spoken by 98% of people online, up from roughly 80 languages previously
Reducing Third-Party Vendor Dependence
Meta was explicit about the workforce implications. Over the next few years, it says it will "reduce our reliance on third-party vendors" as these AI systems take over work that is "better-suited to technology" — particularly repetitive reviews and areas where adversarial tactics change rapidly, such as drug sales and financial scams.
The company was careful to frame this as augmentation rather than replacement, noting that humans will still design, train, and oversee AI systems, and will continue making the highest-stakes decisions. But for the contract moderation workforce that has long handled the most grueling review tasks, the message is clear: AI will absorb an increasing share of that work.
What This Signals for the Industry
Meta's announcement is the clearest signal yet from a major platform that AI-native content moderation is no longer experimental — it is being deployed at billion-user scale. For the broader industry, the questions this raises are significant: How will these systems perform across cultural and linguistic contexts that remain underrepresented in training data? And what accountability mechanisms exist when AI makes consequential moderation mistakes?
Meta says it is rigorously testing each system for bias, consistency, and accuracy against its Community Standards. But the transition from human-led to AI-led enforcement at this scale is unprecedented, and the real-world results will take time to fully evaluate.
