ChatGPT Hits 900 Million Weekly Users as OpenAI Closes $110 Billion Round

The numbers are staggering. OpenAI announced that ChatGPT has reached 900 million weekly active users — up from 800 million in October 2025 — putting it within striking distance of the one-billion mark. The company also revealed 50 million paying subscribers and closed a $110 billion funding round, the largest private raise in history.

The Growth Curve

ChatGPT's user base has grown 350% in 18 months. That trajectory puts it among the fastest-growing consumer products ever, outpacing the early adoption curves of Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp. OpenAI said January and February 2026 are on track to be its biggest months for new subscriber acquisition.

The 50 million paid subscribers suggest a conversion rate above 5% — strong for a freemium product at this scale, and a signal that the free tier is effectively driving upgrades rather than cannibalizing paid demand.

The $110 Billion Round

The funding round valued OpenAI at $730 billion pre-money. Amazon led with $50 billion, followed by Nvidia and SoftBank at $30 billion each. At this valuation, OpenAI is worth more than all but a handful of public companies — and it's still private.

For context, Anthropic's recent $30 billion Series G valued that company at $380 billion. Between the two, over $140 billion in private AI funding has been raised in February 2026 alone. The AI investment wave shows no signs of slowing.

What $110 Billion Buys

OpenAI has signaled that the capital will fund three priorities: scaling compute infrastructure for GPT-5 and beyond, expanding enterprise offerings, and accelerating AI agent development. The company is also investing heavily in custom chip partnerships to reduce its dependence on Nvidia — ironic, given that Nvidia is one of its largest investors.

The question investors are asking: at what point does the revenue catch up to the valuation? OpenAI's annualized revenue is estimated at $12–15 billion, meaning the company trades at roughly 50x revenue. That's aggressive even by AI standards.

The Bigger Picture

Nine hundred million weekly users means ChatGPT is no longer an AI product — it's infrastructure. It's becoming the default interface between humans and information for a significant portion of the global population. For developers building AI-powered applications, the question isn't whether to integrate with models like GPT-5, but how. FreeAcademy's ChatGPT for Complete Beginners course remains the most direct path for those just getting started.

Whether the valuation is justified depends on one thing: whether ChatGPT becomes the operating system of the AI era, or just one product among many. At 900 million users, OpenAI is betting heavily on the former.
